In today’s world, we are reminded daily of the benefits of choosing a healthy lifestyle. These benefits also extend to our workplaces. It is important to not only consider the health of your employees but the health of your organization as well. When good health becomes part of you organization’s culture, it automatically becomes part of the decision making process. And that’s when everyone sees results!
The Elgin St. Thomas Public Health Unit initiated the Health at Work 4 All! program. Born from this program are the Healthy Workplace Awards, and this is where the Elgin Business Resource Centre comes in. As supporters of healthy workplaces, EBRC has partnered with the Health Unit to administer this awards program. Each year, local businesses are encouraged to submit their applications for consideration, and awards are presented to selected local businesses at the EBRC’s Annual General Meeting in June.
Whether you are new to the process or are a past recipient, the application is a roadmap towards a comprehensive healthy workplace. Use the application form as a tool to help you or your committee plan how you are going to address each area and to keep track of your activities and progress. A tip from past recipients: as you develop policies and implement initiatives (walk or bike to work day, staff bowling night, healthy lunch day etc), keep a binder with pictures and examples. This can be submitted with your award application to provide a comprehensive picture of your organization’s efforts, and it will become a future planning tool for you.
Over the years, local award winners have come up with some very creative activities to support Health at Work 4 All! Have fun implementing this program at your workplace. Submit completed application forms to the Elgin Business Resource Centre at 300 South Edgeware Road, St. Thomas, ON N5P 4L1 before May 1st.
